This project was created for an upper-division course at UC Davis focusing on typography and motion graphics.

Prompt: Using Adobe After Effects utilize the typography of two opposing words to create a short movie clip playing with their dichotomy

War & Peace

Project 1 of 6

In response to the prompt, I chose the words war & peace. The word "war" was repeated and combined to create the shape of an arrow. This shape was used as the "w" in war creates the wing of the arrow well and the object serves as a recognizable symbol of war. Similarly, the word "peace" was combined into the shape of a dove; a known symbol of peace.

Alphabet Play
Letter Print

In response to the prompt, I created a clip that used the letters in the alphabet like boomerangs or tools. Some letters bounced or stretched other letterw while others destroyed or erased them.

Prompt: Use Adobe After Effects to create a lyric video that re-interprets a song lifted from Old Time forever. Focus on the audience profile and communication strategy.

In response to the prompt, I chose the song "Don't Be Cruel by The Jordainaires." Given the sound quality, song, and topic, the video is aimed at hopeless romantics with a inclination towards romance and chivalry. The song tells the story of one's journey through unrequited love. The video i created emulates the story with melodramatic textures and colors that characterize the mood in a somewhat playful manner. The moral of the song is that in the end, love wins. The journey is them emulated through a series of images that are connected by a consistent element of one's soul (bouncing purple ball) that explodes into infinity at the end of the story.

For my first project working with ASOH, I worked with him to come up with a simple logo embodying his musical style. He created a rough sketch that exhibited sly, slick movement with a bit of play and the attention grabbing element of the exclamation mark.

Above are the variations to the logo I created for Asoh.  Each plays on the clients last name as the typography emitted a different expression. The exclamation mark and the letters of his name were playfully drawn to create the semblance of an ear. The client liked the version in the middle best as is echoes his bold personality and playful style.

For the next project for the client, I was given the image to the left as well as the color palette above. Using this color scheme I was to make a spread similar to the image with all the important information needed for the client's show.

NEW ASOH POSTER.jpg

Above is the version of the poster i created using both Adobe photoshop and illustrator. Photoshop was used to create the grain and tone while illustrator was used to make the background pattern and typography. This poster ended up being used for the actual live show.

IDEation

Since the app's audience are young college students I experimented with a clean, simple, and modern color scheme that is easy to read and recognize.

Client feedback

After  bringing the initial brainstorm to the client, we decided to go forward with a typeface that was bold, legible, and worked together graphically with the artistic play on the "U".

Implementation

Ultimately, the final product entailed a bold font that fit together geometrically with the artistic "u." "Event" can still be read clearly   from afar and the logo works as a composition on a clean background. This is especially useful for branding on shirts, cards, and app layouts.

ASAlogo.png

ideation

The client requested a logo that incorporated the African continent, patriotic African colors, and the University name. I brainstormed with a few versions and came up with a concept that allows the "ASA" abbreviation to stand out and work in tandem with the African continent.

The client chose the logo that presented the association name clearly with less bold and slightly muted colors so the graphic elements do not detract from the information. The "ASA" abbreviation is clear and recognizable when used in ad. Find the association's page here
